Protect your WordPress account with – Login Lockdown

by Sunny Dsouza on November 20, 2010

login-lockdown-a-wordpress-enhanced-login-security-plugin

Brute force is a common attack these days apart from phishing attacks. What happens in brute force is the attacker first tries to find some basic information about yourself. This is not a difficult task considering that these days public is more open to reveal personal information in social networking sites like Facebook, Friendster,MySpace,Orkut etc..Once the attacker gets such information, he tries to guess your password out of it. This method isn’t difficult and most times it is found effective since people usually formulate their password based on family, places names etc.

However one drawback of this method is that the attacker has to use permutation combination to guess the password and that means more time and attempts to do it successfully. This is where ‘Login lockdown’ comes into picture. This is a very effective plugin for WordPress which  blocks out the  IP address after repeated attempts to hack it.

Find commercially reusable images in Google Images

by Sunny Dsouza on November 20, 2010

In blogging, to make a particular post more interesting we usually try adding relevant images to the blog post to convey our point. After all, its said

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Graphical information adds life and energy to the post and also kind of connects with the audience.

However, one thing we need to be careful while doing this is to find that the image we are attaching is not copyrighted. Because if it is, it could result in you getting fined or in some kind of lawsuit, if caught. most of us, including me, search for images on ‘Google Images’ , and if that’s the case then consider yourself lucky, as Google has options via which you can safely search for images that are commercially reusable.

In order to do this, all you need to do is click on ‘Advanced Search’ under the search box in Google images. You will be presented with the search options as shown below.

Simply select ‘Moderate filtering’ –> ‘labelled for commercial reuse’ or you could even select ‘labelled for commercial reuse with modification’ if you are going to tamper with the image

google-image-reuse

Simple click on ‘Search’ now and you will get all images that are free to reuse anywhere. Its always a better practice to include the ‘credits’ of the person or site from where you picked up the image.

Enjoy safe searching and you don’t have to worry about copyright infringement anymore… Winking smile

Facebook introduces ‘Facebook Messages’ and Invitation for this service

by Sunny Dsouza on November 16, 2010

facebook-mail

Recently Facebook has crossed ‘Ebay’ in terms of revenues to make it the 3rd largest website. And after this move, there is no stopping it.There had been some rumours few days before about Facebook going to introduce its own email system. Finally,it seems to be true as now Facebook has started a page for the same where in it is made clear that this service would be ‘invite only’.

However the term ‘Email’ would be incorrect as Zuckerberg describes it more as a ‘Social Inbox’. According to him this system will be like an inbox for filtering the messages you want to see from friends. However interestingly people can now have an email address @facebook.com Open-mouthed smile…cool, huh!!! Winking smile

Best Online Library service for Puneits –Bigbooks.co.in

by Sunny Dsouza on November 16, 2010

bigbooks-1Actually this only applies to people who live in Pune,India. There is this great book service called “Bigbooks”. Its a website which offers the service like that of a library except that it has even better cooler features as that compared to a real library.

I have personally subscribed to this service for over a month and from my experience, its  pretty cool. I have summed up certain features of this service which I feel makes this site a huge hit.

  • For one, it costs only 150Rs for a month.
  • Since the service is new, currently all the books lended are in spark new condition Smile. (That’s what I observed till now)
  • There is NO deposit.
  • There is FREE delivery and pickup of books from your doorstep Winking smile
  • Even has a good collection of children comics, including Archie’s and Tinkle digest
  • Cool website design. Lets you choose books and add them to your queue. Books are later delivered in that order only (as per availability)

How to partition a single drive on Laptop HDD

by Sunny Dsouza on November 16, 2010

Normally these days, its a common trend to find one big partition on your laptop HDD. Its usually C:\ which is your primary partition and then apart from that if you have any other partition, most probably, its the recovery partition, which is useless as you cant use it. In such cases, its best to divide your primary partition to create one or more secondary discs.

Not only is this because you might want to store movies, music etc on separate drives but also it is a healthy practice to store files on drives other than the primary drive (the one containing your OS). You never know when your OS crashes and the only solution to restore it might be to format the C:\

In that case, you will end up losing important data. But dont worry, today I will show you to divide the factory partitioned C:\ to one or more drives.

First, navigate to ‘Control Panel’->’Administrative tools’->’Computer management’

Right click on C:\ and select the option of  ‘Shrink Volume’

How to backup your WordPress posts

by Sunny Dsouza on November 15, 2010

online-backup-solutionsIf you are a avid blogger, one of the most important things you should know is to backup your wordpress posts daily. Apart from posts, you also need to backup the images, plugins etc.. and so on…however that’s another story which I will explain in a different post.

First, backup the posts. This is not at all a tedious process as wordpress itself has facilities for it.First go to the ‘Dashboard’ section. Under ‘Tools’ find ‘Export’ option (check the pic below)

wordpress-post-backup-1

Under ‘Export’ options, make sure everything is selected for backup. By default, this will already be selected option in the dropdown. Don’t change anything…Simply proceed…

How to use Aero Flip in Windows 7

by Sunny Dsouza on November 9, 2010

One of the most appealing features of windows 7 is Aero Flip. though many of us have heard about it because of its wide publicity and promotion before the launch of windows 7, however i wasn’t very clear on how to get the flip effect.

initially I thought Alt+Tab will do the trick. However I was wrong. It seems to achieve it you must have Windows Home Premium and above and use the ‘Win+Tab’ key

Win7_Win Tab

So just a heads up to all my readers who know about the effect but haven’t tried it out. If you have Windows 7 Home Premium+ editions…just press ‘Win+Tab’ and check the effect as shown above Winking smile Cool, isn’t it Smile
