Use GMail ‘Mute’ to stop the incoming mails from an email address

by Sunny Dsouza on May 7, 2011

Here is an option from GMail for all those who want to permanently block off an email address sending spam. The feature is called ‘Mute’ and its available under the ‘More Actions’ –> ‘Mute’.

This is one of the easiest way to stop incoming mails from a particular email address and its also effective. the feature especially comes in handy when you have subscribed to some email newsletters a while ago and you now find it increasingly annoying Devil

Well, the next best thing is that in case you unintentionally blocked email then you could still unmute it using the same ‘unmute’ option.

Try out this option next time when you need to block a email address and do give me your feedback on how it works out for you.

How to restrict folder access across multiple Windows accounts

by Sunny Dsouza on May 7, 2011

restrict-access-website-logoMany times we come across situations when we need to share our computer with others. Though we can give them a separate account to login to but except for the document folders and user folders (which are separate for every account on Windows), the other drives are still open for everyone to see.

Today, I will show you a way, via which you will be able to hide any folder from viewing from any other account other than the admin account. Winking smile The steps are pretty simple and I have tried my best to explain them with a series of screenshots, still if you get stuck executing them at any moment of time, feel free to approach me through comment section below.

Barcode yourself!!

by Sunny Dsouza on May 7, 2011

barcode-yourselfEager to encode yourself into a barcode. If you have watched/played the Hitman series, you can recall Agent 47 having a barcode behind his bald head. the reason being, he is one of the clones created in a lab.

Well, perhaps the day is not far when each one of us might be identified via such techniques only. but why wait, when you can try it out now itself Smile with tongue out

Barcode yourself is an interesting and unique site which asks certain information about you and after filling in the form appropriately, you get a barcode with all your information encoded in it.

As per the site author, the basis of barcoding in terms of humor

The calculation an individual's BMI based on the height and weight data reveals the health of an individual, thus those considered underweight or overweight are worth less money. In addition, in comment to the dominance of the United States, all barcodes are published in inches and pounds. A female barcode takes the real-world hit of earning 72 cents less than each dollar earned by a man. The average for age takes on the most comic tone, borrowing from the worlds' most famous 33-year old, Jesus.

The best part is you can also Share, print the barcode and even more have the barcode over a variety of products such as cup or t-shirt. The site has a store page wherein if interested you could purchase products with your barcode over it. Anyways why would anyone want to spend on that now!! Smile with tongue out

So why not Barcode yourself today and share it over here, if you want, below Smile with tongue out. Below is my information in the form of a barcode Smile

Turn your Notepad into a simple LOG diary

by Sunny Dsouza on February 2, 2011

notepad-with-pencil-of-spiral-bindingAn old but yet a useful and simple tip for all my readers…this is a windows trick to turn your notepad file into a simple dairy . What happens here is that after you apply this trick, you will find that every time you double click to open the file the Notepad will append the Current date and time to the end of the file and wait for your entry.

1. Open a blank Notepad file

2. Write .LOG (in CAPS only) as the first line of the file, followed by an Enter. Save the File and close it.

3. Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the Current Date and Time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the Line after.

4. Type your notes and then save and close the file.

5. Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending the  Date and Time to the end of the file and placing the cursor below it.

This is a simulation of a log file. Amusingly I didn’t realize of this trick till now and currently am using it to take log notes of every feature am coding for my new website. It’s come most handy and useful and best, without any hassle of installing any external software for the same .

Do let me know your views on this tips…

Protect your WordPress account with – Login Lockdown

by Sunny Dsouza on November 20, 2010

login-lockdown-a-wordpress-enhanced-login-security-plugin

Brute force is a common attack these days apart from phishing attacks. What happens in brute force is the attacker first tries to find some basic information about yourself. This is not a difficult task considering that these days public is more open to reveal personal information in social networking sites like Facebook, Friendster,MySpace,Orkut etc..Once the attacker gets such information, he tries to guess your password out of it. This method isn’t difficult and most times it is found effective since people usually formulate their password based on family, places names etc.

However one drawback of this method is that the attacker has to use permutation combination to guess the password and that means more time and attempts to do it successfully. This is where ‘Login lockdown’ comes into picture. This is a very effective plugin for WordPress which  blocks out the  IP address after repeated attempts to hack it.

Find commercially reusable images in Google Images

by Sunny Dsouza on November 20, 2010

In blogging, to make a particular post more interesting we usually try adding relevant images to the blog post to convey our point. After all, its said

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Graphical information adds life and energy to the post and also kind of connects with the audience.

However, one thing we need to be careful while doing this is to find that the image we are attaching is not copyrighted. Because if it is, it could result in you getting fined or in some kind of lawsuit, if caught. most of us, including me, search for images on ‘Google Images’ , and if that’s the case then consider yourself lucky, as Google has options via which you can safely search for images that are commercially reusable.

In order to do this, all you need to do is click on ‘Advanced Search’ under the search box in Google images. You will be presented with the search options as shown below.

Simply select ‘Moderate filtering’ –> ‘labelled for commercial reuse’ or you could even select ‘labelled for commercial reuse with modification’ if you are going to tamper with the image

google-image-reuse

Simple click on ‘Search’ now and you will get all images that are free to reuse anywhere. Its always a better practice to include the ‘credits’ of the person or site from where you picked up the image.

Enjoy safe searching and you don’t have to worry about copyright infringement anymore… Winking smile

How to partition a single drive on Laptop HDD

by Sunny Dsouza on November 16, 2010

Normally these days, its a common trend to find one big partition on your laptop HDD. Its usually C:\ which is your primary partition and then apart from that if you have any other partition, most probably, its the recovery partition, which is useless as you cant use it. In such cases, its best to divide your primary partition to create one or more secondary discs.

Not only is this because you might want to store movies, music etc on separate drives but also it is a healthy practice to store files on drives other than the primary drive (the one containing your OS). You never know when your OS crashes and the only solution to restore it might be to format the C:\

In that case, you will end up losing important data. But dont worry, today I will show you to divide the factory partitioned C:\ to one or more drives.

First, navigate to ‘Control Panel’->’Administrative tools’->’Computer management’

Right click on C:\ and select the option of  ‘Shrink Volume’

How to use Aero Flip in Windows 7

by Sunny Dsouza on November 9, 2010

One of the most appealing features of windows 7 is Aero Flip. though many of us have heard about it because of its wide publicity and promotion before the launch of windows 7, however i wasn’t very clear on how to get the flip effect.

initially I thought Alt+Tab will do the trick. However I was wrong. It seems to achieve it you must have Windows Home Premium and above and use the ‘Win+Tab’ key

Win7_Win Tab

So just a heads up to all my readers who know about the effect but haven’t tried it out. If you have Windows 7 Home Premium+ editions…just press ‘Win+Tab’ and check the effect as shown above Winking smile Cool, isn’t it Smile
